10 fisheries restricted areas cover 1 760 000 km2
Guided by its 2030 Strategy, the GFCM protects sensitive species and vulnerable marine ecosystems, as well as essential fish habitats such as spawning and reproductive grounds, with the establishment of fisheries restricted areas (FRA) across the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
10 multiannual management plans with 6 500+ vessels
Some stocks under management plans established by the GFCM show a larger than average reduction in fishing pressure. Notable examples include a 77 percent reduction for common sole in the Adriatic Sea, and a 73 percent reduction for turbot in the Black Sea
The GFCM capacity development programme for Mediterranean fisheries
MedSea4Fish provides resources, training and technical assistance where they’re most needed. In doing so it helps to level the playing field across the Mediterranean Sea on knowledge, expertise and infrastructure.
Aquaculture Demonstration Centres
Aquaculture Demonstration Centres (ADCs) act as specialized hubs where the sector can share knowledge, promote technical cooperation and increase stakeholder capacity at a subregional level, to promote sustainable aquaculture in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
